The Oscars anti-rant

By now the internet is turning into furious flames because Leo did not get his deserved nom from the Academy… Amour? Haneke? Seriously? What about Ben Affleck? Katherin Bigelow? Why the hell are they not in the best Director category? WTF? No special effects nomination for Rust & Bone? WHERE THE HELL IS BATMAN? It’s a snubbery in here I tells ya!

But that’s not what we’re here to do, leave the bitchin’ and moaning to everyone else, we want to do things differently, so to share the good surprises, here are the things I consider that the Academy did right.

For starters there’s Beasts of the Southern Wild, let’s call this the little movie that could and it’s especially gratifying to see its young star Quvenzhané Wallis in the best actress category, the youngest to ever be nominated.

It’s a little weird it didn’t get a best cinematography nod but it was a hard category to get into, great work can be seen in all of the nominees, Anna Karenina, Django Unchained, Life of Pi, Lincoln & Skyfall.

The Best Supporting Actor category came out perfect, with all of the nominess being actors who’ve already won an Oscar before.

  • Alan Arkin for “Argo
  • Robert de Niro  for “Silver Linings Playbook
  • Philip Seymour Hoffman for  “The Master
  • Tommy Lee Jones for “Lincoln
  • Christoph Waltz  for “Django Unchained

Just look at all that motherfriggin’ talent and awesomeness, at least Django got some Best Picture and Best Supporting actor love, if Waltz hadn’t been nominated then I’d definitely want to burn something down.

Let’s return with more awesomeness with the Best Animated Feature category, Frankenweenie, Paranorman, Wreck-it Ralph, The Pirates! Band of Misfits & Brave! All excellent, fun movies really showcasing the best that animation has to offer.

The Animated Short Film category also has a couple of favorites including the very sweet Paperman and the first ever Simpsons short “Maggie Simpson in ‘The Longest Daycare’” which I considered the best reason to see Ice Age 4.

Ana Karenina getting a best score nom is well deserved, it’s the best thing it had to offer, that an its costumes. Along with Karenina, the best costume category also has some nifty inclusions, there’s the obvious Lincoln and ‘Le Mis‘ as part of the big players, and the dueling Snow White films making a cameo appearance in here as well, well deserved since the best thing they had going for them was their visual aesthetics, especially with Mirror Mirror, the costumes where down right FABULOUS!

In other news Moonrise Kingdom got thrown a bone for Best Writing keeping fans like myself happy.

The Visual Effects category also has ample room for some fan service as well with the inclusion of The Hobbit, The Avengers & Prometheus alongside Life of Pi and the very deserved Snow White and the Huntsman (holy crap imagine if that wins)!

Hobbit also got noms in Production Design, Makeup & Hairstyling (boy did they do hairstyling).

I have to add that my girlfriend will also be excited that Hugh Jackman made the cut for Best Actor from Les Miserables

And last but not least “Skyfall” by Adele made the cut for best song, frick yeah bitches!!! Hold your breath and count to ten, feel the earth move and then hear my heart burst again.

So just remember, that when it crumbles (when it crumbles), we will stand tall, face it all together and just stay tuned because it’s awards season and we will have a bit more coverage.
