10 Movies with Post-Credit Easter Eggs
Becoming popular among comedies of the 1980s and occurring more and more often in the past decade, an extra scene added during or after the end credits is a fun way for directors to throw in an extra joke, wrap up a loose end or drop clues about a sequel. Here’s the ten worth hanging around for after the lights have gone up.
10. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
During the production of his fifth film, Kevin Smith was very vocal about this being the final appearance of his two trademark characters and symbolised this with Alanis Morrisette, reprising her role of God from Dogma, literally closing the book on the series after the credits. Granted, it didn’t take long for Smith to then realise that he didn’t have the talent to make any other type of film and he went scurrying back to his roots for Clerks 2.
9. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
A straight-forward little gag for those wondering whatever happened to the amnesia stricken Professor Lockhart after the events at Hogwarts.
8. The Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise
Each of the ‘Pirates’ movies have scenes after the credits to fill in minor plot holes, tie up loose ends or just for a joke. Featured above is from the original film, explaining why Jack the Monkey is still zombified in the sequel. Also worth waiting for – the natives new god, Will’s return and Penelope Cruz finding something interesting wash in with the tide.
7. Kung-Fu Panda (2008)
A simple, nice scene that shows Po and Master Shifu enjoying some quiet time before we pan out to reveal the seed that Shifu had planted earlier in the movie has grown into a plant. Dialogue free, yet a good little moment that shows how the relationship between the characters has changed.
6. X-Men 3: The Last Stand (2006)
Man, this movie sucked. It sucks so hard I could use it to get dust out of the carpet. They even managed to completely undo one of the biggest moments of the film – the death of Charlies Xavier – by having him pop up in a coma patient after the credits. This makes the list for being pointless – adding a post-credit scene just for the sake of having one.
5. Toy Story 2 (1999)
Bloopers weren’t taken into consideration for this list. Bloopers are usually only funny to those who were involved in the film (except for Jackie Chan films). Pixar gets a mention for their brilliant faux-bloopers which took them hours to complete just to squeeze in some extra gags during the credits.
4. Cidade de Deus (City of God) (2004)
Trailer:
The true story depicted in this movie is harrowing enough as it is, and it delivers on it’s mission of telling the world about life in the Rio De Janerio slums with such an impact that audiences are left stunned by the time the end credits roll around. At this point the director includes real life footage of one of the movies key figures. An old interview with ‘Knockout’ Ned serves to reinforce the reality of the situation.
3. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
The song is classic cheese, and the final humiliation of Rooney in front of the busload of students is a great cap for the movie. But stick around longer for a final message from Ferris!
2. The Muppet Movie (1979)
The original sting in the tail. The credits for the Muppet’s debut feature is packed with felt action, but the kicker is at the end when Animal addresses the audience directly, telling them to ‘go home’ before falling asleep.
1. Iron Man (2004)
Each of the movies associated with the upcoming blockbuster The Avengers – The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Iron Man 2 – features a link to the next movie after the credits and at this point even the average punter knows to hang around to see what’s going to happen. The first was the best though, and not just because it was the first. At this point The Avengers movie was just speculation with no cast, script or director. Rumours turned up in every corner of the internet, complete with speculation about Samuel L. Jackson would play Nick Fury. The first solid information audiences were given about this major future project was Fury stepping out of the shadows in this post-credit scene to invite Tony Stark to join the ‘Avengers Initiative’. Jaws drop. Fanboys delight.

After reading this, was trying to pinpoint when post credit scenes became such a regular thing, a natural part of the narrative.
The Fast and Furious was the first time I remember people talking about a post credit scene. And I know Iron Man and the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” gets alll the love for post credit scenes, but X3 was the first Marvel story to use the extra scene, if I remember correctly.
I do think special mention should be made for Captain America, as it had, as far as I can remember, the first post credits trailer, or teaser.
Anyway, good stuff!

Actually, both ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘Back to the Future Part II’ featured trailers after their credits!

I’m so glad you’ve done this for us. Because I HATE being the only person still in the theater after everyone else has left, waiting, only to be jilted with no Easter Egg.
Of course, I do get to be first in line AFTER everyone else has peed, so there is that…

Most of the new Marvel movies have them. It’s cool how they’re using them to set up the Avengers movie. Which Joss is making. So it’s exciting. Yeah.

Kip’s wedding after “Napolean Dynamite” was pretty good. I also like the “Bug’s Life” bloopers. They actually parody blooper reels.

I used to lack the patience to wait for the credits in the theater. Now that I am older I would rather wait and let the crowd die down so I can walk out gracefully!

All good choices.
I’d liked to have seen Young Sherlock Holmes in the top 10 though, where, if you stick around to the end of the credits, you find out that not only did the movie’s bad guy, Rathe, survive – he has changed his name and is the one who ultimately becomes Holmes arch enemy, Moriarty.

The one at the end of “Airplane!” is still a classic in my mind…plus there are all sorts of hidden jokes if you actually read the credits of that one.

Since you included Harry Potter, I’d like to point out another little post-credits…well, actually it’s not a scene, but a proper Easter egg. At the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’s credits, a title announces that “No dragons were harmed in the making of this movie”. If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll get the joke instantly.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was actually the first movie to have footage that rolled after the credits had begun, at least, that’s what a documentary I saw recently claimed.

You can see above that The Muppets claimed that title seven years earlier – using a very similar gag.
