Nine Reasons I Don’t Like Kevin Smith Anymore
Towards the end of the 1990s I finished high school and went on to study cinema at university, and for the first time in my life I was surrounded by people who were equally infatuated with the silver screen. Even better I’d found people who’d heard of the film makers I’d heard of – like Kubrick, the Coens and Kevin Smith. We had a particular love for the works of Kevin Smith. Why? Because he did it in a way we could do it.

A god among men.
He didn’t use studio backing, he didn’t have the friend of the friend to get him into the biz and he wasn’t beholden to financial backers. He’d sold his comic collection, used his minimum wage workplace as a setting and made a cult hit. Clerks was edgy, true to life, backed with memorable characters and darkly funny – basically it was the movie we all envisioned ourselves making. Off the strength of his indie film he launched himself into the film business. These days we look at Peter Jackson as the director who pulled off this trick with real success.
These days…well…I don’t like him. And it’s not just that his current movies suck. But I suppose that’s as good a place as any to get started…
#9 – His New Movies Suck
Sure you may have been able to find something to enjoy about Red State. We didn’t, as you can find out by clicking here and here. It was an original and topical concept poorly executed. If you feel that the level of humour and story that was present in Mallrats enough to carry another entire movie then you may have found Zack and Miri Make a Porno worth the time it took to watch it. Other than that we have a muddled big budget sequel to an indie starter film from more than a decade previously, Jersey Girl and Cop Out. If you think you can defend the last one on the list then you are provably wrong.
Most film makers will improve over time. Kevin Smith doesn’t. There’s a reason for it.

If you saw this movie then I feel sorry for you.
#8 – He Can’t Accept Criticism
Every film-maker, no matter how good they are, will face criticism from fans and critics alike. Even if they produce a smash hit there’s going to be some people who don’t see it the same way as the masses or some nits that people will pick. There really are two adult ways to deal with criticism when working in the public arena. You can turn a blind eye to it, ignore it entirely and rely on your own judgement and that of those you respect, or make a genuine effort to learn from the criticism and take on another person’s point of view.
“Writing a nasty review for #CopOut is akin to bullying a retarded kid who was getting a couple chuckles from the normies by singing AFTERNOON DELIGHT … All you’ve done is make fun of something that wasn’t doing you any harm and wanted only to give some cats a some fun laughs.
If you don’t want to take an adult approach you can routinely argue with members of the public over the internet and try and point out why their criticisms are wrong. For bonus points you can feature a sub-plot in a movie that shows you responding to online criticism by going around the people’s houses and beating them up. And the people you are beating up are children.
#7 – He Can’t Get Over Himself
Narcissism takes human form in Kevin Smith. Everything he does is worth of public attention. Jason Mewes joins him for a live show that features the two of them having a conversation? DVD release! He spends half of every day sitting on the toilet reading about himself on the internet. Publish his journal! Rarely an interview or cameo appearance will go by without requiring some kind of special edition DVD and action figure tie-in. Only the most die-hard fan could possibly find any of this interesting, and only the most adamant ego-maniac could think people would want to see it. He’s still under the impression that he’s the main selling point for any project he’s involved in. The tagline for Red State runs along the lines of ‘a surprising movie from that Kevin Smith’. Because people are so enamoured with him and his unique style they’d be downright shocked by any variation from the norm.
Pay money to watch conversations between a washed up indie film director and a recovering drug addict!
#6 – He Airs His Dirty Laundry in Public
Not every meeting in Hollywood leads to a movie being greenlit. More often than not they’ll not be able to follow through on a project with the intended people involved. One reason this may happen is that some people, such as a writer and director or producer, couldn’t see eye-to-eye on the film. Naturally most people don’t take their grievances into the public arena.
Kevin Smith does. His writing job of Superman falls through so he starts blasting Tim Burton in public, likewise with producer Sonnenfeld. He doesn’t work well with Bruce Willis, so he turns it into a public issue. If he thinks this makes him sound anything other then petty he is sorely mistaken. Sometimes he takes it to an extraordinary level of pettiness.
#5 – He’s Extraordinarily Petty
As said in the introduction to this piece Kevin Smith was seen to be something of a hero to us young film students. The fact that he was so accessible to his fans made him even cooler. But then we saw the way he responded to his fans. Responding to criticism from professional critics is one thing…spending your entire day personally arguing with comments made on fan forums is another matter entirely. Then you have the really over-blown events like his issue with Southwest Airlines.
For those out of the Kevin Smith loop (and who could blame you) in 2010 he was expected to fly on Southwest Airlines but was asked to leave the flight by the pilot who saw his level of obesity as a safety hazard. They offered him compensation, which he turned down, before unleashing an unbelievable amount of bile onto the internet. He used twitter to attack the airline for maintaining safety standards, dedicated two hour long podcasts to the issue and released a ridiculous TWENTY-FOUR video responses on youtube. After that he should go to the hardware store, buy some timber, build a bridge, and get over it.

“No sir, it’s because I watched ‘Jersey Girl’ last week and…I just want you to leave.”
#4 – He doesn’t Finish his Work
Nobody likes it when a writer or film-maker puts a story out into the public but doesn’t finish it. Sometimes it’s out of their hands, such as Twin Peaks and Firefly, which were taken off the air before Lynch and Whedon (respectively) could finish them to their satisfaction. Sometimes it’s just because they writer is lazy, and in this case it is by the writer’s own admission that laziness is the cause here.
Considering the disdain I have for Smith in this feature you’d think that I wouldn’t care much about such an issue, but here’s the rub: there was one project that still generated some respect for the man. He’d written a Batman story and it was pretty decent (except that weird bit about The Joker accepting cash to bang a dude) and then he wrote a sequel that was better. The sequel ended on a cliff-hanger with the promise of a concluding volume. It never turned up. Two years have passed and nothing is on the horizon. Seriously uncool. Maybe he’s just run out of ideas.
#3 – He’s Got a Bad Attitude Towards Parenting
Being a parent is a great thing. If you’ve tried it you’d know. Kevin Smith is a parent and I’m sure that he loves his daughter very much. But what the hell was going on in Jersey Girl?! The movie was released in the years following the birth of his daughter and much of the humour in that movie is about how horrible parenting is. The main character goes from being a high-powered business-man to a poor blue collar schmoe who has to live with at his parent’s house because he has a child. His sex life goes to a complete zero and he sneakily rents porn because he has a child. Changing a nappy is the most horrific thing a person could face. Smith has based much of his early work off his personal life. Hopefully this wasn’t the case here.

Yeah dude, what’s your problem? Thinking you could have a career and a sex life while being a parent…idiot.
#2 – His Autobiographies Paint the Picture of an Unpleasant Person
For some reason Smith felt the need to publish his personal journal. Reading it will tell you the following things about Kevin Smith. He feeds himself and his family fast food for three meals every day. He spends several hours each morning sitting on the toilet with a laptop. He spends so long sitting on the toilet every morning that he developed an anal fissure and had to be told by a medical professional to stop spending so much time sitting on the toilet. He may also spend so much time sitting on the toilet because he eats fast food three times a day. He also complains about being fat and claims that he his so self-conscious that he keeps a shirt on during sex. Not so self-conscious that he published a book in which he reveals to the public that he put his junk in his wife’s butt.
Plus there’s all the issues of being petty listed above, they come through pretty strong. He complains at length about anyone who criticizes him. No doubt he did this from the toilet
#1 – He’s Not Going to Make Another Good Film
There’s quite a few things standing in the way of Smith making a good movie. For one thing he can’t work with anyone other than his friends. Whenever he’s tried to make a movie with people outside of his personal circle of stoners and buddies it’s backfired on him.
A key example would be the fallout from Cop Out during which it got out that Bruce Willis had clashed with Smith over his style of (or lack thereof) directing. Willis’ gripe was that Smith wouldn’t actually direct the actors but get stoned and sit behind the monitor all day. Smith countered by saying that being stoned makes him more creative and work harder and that the actors didn’t need his direction. One could further counter this by pointing out that the movie showed little in the way of creativity, effort or direction, so whatever he was smoking, it didn’t work for him.
The second barrier between Smith and a good film is his inability to handle anything new. Occasionally he’d claim that he was moving past his ‘Jay and Silent Bob’ universe stories, but then he’d go running back to them the moment he staggers while taking a new path. Even with Zack and Miri Make a Porno the Jason Mewes character was Jay in everything but name.
After the lack of success seen by Red State and Cop Out he’s declared that he’ll retire from directing, focusing on recording his nonsensical conversation and charging people money for them. At this point it’ll be best if he sticks that one out.
I was reading this expecting to come back with a dozen zingers to prove your points wrong. Sadly, I cannot. Great writing about a fading star in Hollywood.

It’s difficult not to agree, unfortunately. And your list makes an important point: no one is safe from becoming complacent and egocentric when in the public eye.

Well actually I don’t think he changed. Clerks is very funny I like it but still these guys Randall and Dante who we are supposed to admire are a bunch of losers who are so unable to deal with criticisms and are too scared to face life that they just do not evolve and spend there time criticizing others and cultivating bitterness. Which is very close to Smith’s above description.

I find that I have this jaded disappointed feeling with musicians usually after the 2 or 3 new album. Case in point Norah Jones. I adore her music and was ready to support her new album but it’s not her and the piano (why we fell in love with her in the first place) It’s pop music with a BAND???? I mean come on I’m not asking her to go all Garth Brooks on us and come out with an alter ego but…
My point is when money comes artists start thinking about what they think others want them to do. Not what they LIKE to do. I will still support Kevin Smith but I am not going to the movie theatre to spend 40 bucks on a movie that I could HAPPILY wait for it to hit Red Box for a buck…. or in Cop Out’s case a 2 for 1….:(

Gfunk: thank you for articulating what has been bothering me about Kevin Smith. Sadly I find his movies to be revolting due to the way he promotes drug use, bathroom humor, and the slacker lifestyle. Therefore they had no positive influence on me, nor do I see why Clerks is taught in schools, especially with the oral sex jokes. I like his comic book chats and movie reviews. He’s a good down-to-earth sensitive guy, but unfortunately has a passive-aggressive personality that a lot of so-called “good guys” have. Every point you made was on the money; I realize your article is a year old, but Smith just keeps getting worse and worse with his public feuds with people, which all stem from him being a geek.

Just made my way here, and what a great article to point out what I have been thinking about in the back of my mind about Kevin Smith. I really think his slide began with his obsession with weed. He even writes about it in a message to the reader in one of his latest Batman trades. About how he smoked himself silly and then the next morning woke up and this amazing Batman comic script was in front of him. That means he should smoke ALL THE TIME! Why does a guy who is 38 and never smoked marijuana start up a habit like this? I think it takes a guy who can’t focus, and makes the problem worse (When will we see Bellicosity? etc.). Surely there is one person in his life who could say…Kev…chill with the weed for a bit, everyone gets writer’s block. I hold out hope we could see something good out of him again. But it would mean letting go the cottage industry that is Kevin Smith’s personal life. The hard part is, I want to like him. I think some of his web content is interesting (when it doesn’t focus only on him). So I guess the best followup to all this would be: Has Kevin Smith changed? Or was he always like this and we just didn’t know before the age of 24/7 blogging and self promotion?

I have to say that I was never that impressed with Kevin Smith’s work. Clerks is still probably his best movie and yet I never felt it deserved the sort of cult status it attained. It was funny at times, even clever, but I could never get over how tediously bad the dialogue is. It sounded like it was written by that douchebag that we all know that is so impressed with himself for making it through college, as if he were the only one to ever do it, that he now has to annoy the piss out of everyone he speaks to by using as many big words as can think of to prove how smart he is. Combine that with the cringe-worthy acting and you have a movie that is almost impossible to bear more than the once. When I think of great dialogue, I think of Quinton Tarentino. When I think of shit dialogue, I think of Kevin Smith. I’ve never watched a movie of his where I did’nt, at some point, roll my eyes and think “This dialogue is so forced. People just don’t talk this way”.
And I want to say one other thing, and its directly to Mr. Smith. We get it! You like Star Wars and comic books. I’m nausited hearing about it at this point.

I don’t love all of Kevin Smith’s movies. I didn’t really like Red State. But many of them are really enjoyable. Tusk was great. And we disagree entirely on what Jersey Girl was saying. It’s an affirmation of parenthood, not a denigration of it. Affleck’s character is so blinded by his ambition that he views his daughter as a speedbump to his success for many years. At the critical moment when he’s supposed to choose between his daughter and his dream job, he chooses his daughter. That’s when he realizes how much more important she is to him than his career would have been. I thought the film was very sweet and was ultimately affirming of parenthood.
As for your other points denigrating the man himself, I will say that I have met him in person. You will not meet a kinder person than Kevin Smith. Though he is vulgar as hell, I found him to be very decent to his fans. I saw no evidence of a God-complex there.
He knows he has an audience and plays to them very well. But it has less to do with arrogance and more to do with openness. He probably shares more than I would, but that’s his choice.

Also, I forgot to mention that he has several films in the canon. He just finished one called Yoga-Hosers. Next is Clerks 3, MallBrats, another film called Moose Jaws, and he is coming up with a miniseries called “Hit Somebody” I don’t know if these will be good or not, but I’m not writing him off.

Talentless, un-funny, self absorbed, fat shit. Can anybody tell me what is remotely amusing about J and silent Bob? ” I get stoned and say dude”. And? Or have I missed the point? The time when he was culturally relevant is long long gone, if indeed it ever was.
We already had 2 counter-culture comedy stoners. They are called Cheech and Chong and are a thousand times more entertaining. I firmly believe that one day society will look back at the steaming pile of un-funny shit that is Clerks and think “my god wtf were we thinking” reading this article it would seem that it’s already happening 🙂
There are Directors that have made better films with less resources than Kevin Smith and don’t expect the world to suck them off for it. The fact that his ass is now too fat for a 747 to carry isn’t surprising either. This is what happens when people start believing there own bullshit. I smoke marijuana everyday. I don’t use it as justification for being lazy/stupid. Why has Kevin Smith tried to reinforce that connection in the publics mind between being useless and smoking Marijuana? I’ll tell you why, because he was never cool. Just a fat shit corporate shrill from the bottom to the top 🙂 and I hope you read this Kevin and I fucking dare you to respond.

I am a Kevin Smith fan. Really Clerks thru clerks 2. No jersey girl. Tusk was novel. Red State was…Idk…I liked it, not sure why tho. Cop out….I agree with all comments listed above. Now about the article, as a fan of a few of his podcasts (WHICH ARE FREE BTW), I found myself a bit embarrassed at first by the fact that I agreed with everything you said. I mean I loved the Cop Out Bruce Willis story the 1st time I heard it. Then a smile here and there during later mentions. Now I just want to fucking lay into him on his twitter everytime Willis is mentioned. I don’t bc I don’t wanna be blocked and I am generally still a fan. There are A LOT of things he and his friends say that make me lose my shit. And I thought about it, there are no other celebrities that I am a fan of that I get pissed off at so much. I’m a die hard 311 fan, their latest album was the 1st one I thought was crap. But my affection doesn’t waver I just don’t listen to that album. I can’t do that with smith. I’m getting fucking angry typing this, and I’m a fan! I figured it out after reading your article. You came on strong with point after point that got me thinkin why do I like this guy, but your points as well as your article fizzles by the end and I began to see u as much of a whiny bitch as he is. Thats the thing, I don’t have these inner battles with Simon Pegg or Joss Whedon, bc they aren’t in my face all the time. Kevin Smith has made like 6-8 good movies since I was 13. I’m 30 now. But I still have this connection to him. It’s bc he puts out an incredible amount of other content. Most being free podcasts. And I listen to them even tho half the time I disagree with him. Why? Bc he’s entertaing. He can carry 150 podcasts a year and entertain and keep his fans. I got thru half a page article with u and I was done. He puts out so much seemingly garbage content bc people love it, even if they wanna punch him half the time. Name one other celeb who can do that. Who almost feels like your buddy with a differing opinion. Like it or not he’s got something special , no matter what a bitch he acts like sometimes. Let’s see u make 6 giant dick jokes and somehow gain an undying loyal fanbase….go on….try. you’ve already failed. You don’t see that the reason we all loved him bc of clerks, is the reason we all love him now as a podcaster. -Von. P.S. I can’t fucking wait for clerks 3 & Mallrats 2 !

Perfectly freaking stated. You stated my opinion on BOTH this article and also my fan love for Kevin Smith so perfectly, that they aren’t worth re-articulating. I agree completely that his movies haven’t been worth a damn, pretty much since Jersey Girl. I enjoy Clerks 2, and I haven’t gotten to Red State/Tusk, but expect them to be average at best, but not bad. I will watch them today, to have a solid opinion, as opposed to other emotional bloviators. As far as Kevin Smith goes, I DO think he is a an egotistical asshole, and probably wrong just about half the time……..BUT he puts out TONS of great content. I forgive any celebrity for being a douchebag, even when their douchiness is more of a confirmed reality that we have to do with, since a lot of issues people have with Kevin is that on his podcasts, and interviews, autobiography, etc, he is 100% a douche. An amiable, joking, harmless slacker, but a douchebag nonetheless, and a very passive aggressive one at times. That being said, once you realize that he is a creator, and honestly surprisingly creative and voluminous in his efforts at large, not just in film, but all his interests, you really can’t fault the man. I may not like recent Kevin Smith movies, but I will still rewatch/watch Hollywood Babble-On, and several Smodcast episodes. I’m not a picky fan of anything, but in Kevin Smith’s case, he isn’t a one hit wonder with Clerks, and people need to accept that many artists are douchebags, and creation isn’t easy, and they do have terrible habits and character flaws……….yet that is actually what makes them great, or at least more credible in the end, not what detracts from them. Not everyone is a super professional directing savant like Spielberg, Nolan, and JJ Abrams. Some people create from fragility, and a lack of self-confidence, and weakness. I think Kevin tends to do great work when he comes from that perspective. It’s when he becomes egotistical that you get things like tusk, and Yoga Hosiers, Moose Jaws, and all that True North dreck. Gladly I don’t have to watch it, so I stick to the podcasts, which brings me to the point that he passes my “if this celebrity dropped dead today, would you truly care” test that any celebrity of consequence has to pass with their fanbase. When Michael Jackson died, it wasn’t a big deal to me because his great work was behind him. If Kevin Smith died, it would suck for me because I LOVE (I mean obsessively) Hollywood Babble-On, and am a strong fan of Smodcast with Mosier, Fatman on Batman, and like 4 other things he is instrumental in, not to mention that he is an excellent/original comic book writer/fan/thinker/motivator. When I think about it that way, I’m OBVIOUSLY not saying that Kevin Smith is more impactful than Michael Jackson, or even that he is more impactful to me than Michael Jackson. I’m just saying that I would be much sadder today, if Kevin Smith died, than I was on the day Michael Jackson died because Kevin is still pumping out great content. I mean Hollywood Babble-on is basically 1.5 hours worth of ribald humor/entertainment, every single Sunday at midnight, on demand, never late, always there, free. You CANNOT argue against that, or diminish it.

You’re dead right. Kevin Smith is an egomaniacal jerk and probably always has been. He thinks everything he says is clever (it isn’t) and everything he does is worthy of an audience (it isn’t). I’ve also been bothered for years by his relationship with his punching bag – I mean friend – Jason Mewes. It seems Smith has always used, insulted, and made fun of Mewes, who clearly hasn’t the guts to stand up for himself let alone walk away from Smith altogether. Smith has been bullying him from the beginning, and very publicly. He’s likely the reason Mewes turned to heroin in the first place.
As for his films, I grew up with his early films and still love Clerks and Chasing Amy to this day. I also like Dogma, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and to a degree, Jersey Girl. Unfortunately, every film he’s made since has stunk. I’m sure his inability to take criticism is the main reason.
Your list is excellent. I’m glad someone had the balls to speak the truth about Smith rather than continually kissing his ass.

The prime evidence of Smith losing his fastball was “Clerks 2”. Here you’re following up one of the greatest black and white indie films of all-time, and you decide on a sequel that’s full color? Not to mention the over the top antics and ridiculously cringey scenes (I still shudder with revulsion whenever I think of the “ABC,123” scene—Good Lord…). The entire sequel was just awful, and was very indicative of just how much Hollywood the Leonardo kid from Jersey had become.

I mean she was like a main character in Jay and Silent Bob reboot, and she was terrible. Just terrible. Not to mention whole movie was garbage. I mean he injected so much politics and social commentary into it. I give up.

I wouldn’t be criticizing his daughter for her appearance even if I did write it now. That’ll be tacky and mean.

i was the target demographic when clerks and all of those movies came out…i enjoyed those movies at the time up until Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but then around that time I supposed I grew out of that mindset, or just learned to appreciate movies on a different level…I don’t know exactly. At some point, I tried to watch some of his first movies again and realized that they just don’t hold up for me. Personally, I think he’s a complete hack. His films are amateurish at best. I don’t think I have seen anything of his past JaSBSB, so I can only comment on those, but his writing of dialog is just shit. Every character speaks the same way, every character is the same, just different aspects of his personality/pysche and its PAINFULLY obvious. I have wanted to like him since the 90s and I did for a short while, but now-a-days, I just wish he’d go away, or at the very least, stop dressing like a fucking circus clown and those hand gestures, constantly. If you chopped off his hands, I seriously don’t think he’d be able to communicate AT ALL….I’ve spent too much time thinking about him and typing this shit out. And please spare me the “how many movies have you made”, “you’re just jealous” statements. I don’t need to be a film maker to hate on this guy or his movies or to have an opinion, whether you want to hear it or not, and I sure as shit am not jealous of this douchebag.
