The Pull List: Must Read Comics of 11/28/12
R.I.P.D.: City of the Damned #1
By: Peter Lenkov, Jeremy Barlow, Tony Parker, Dave Wilkins
Publisher: Dark Horse
Price $3.50
The Lowdown: I never heard of RIPD until they cast Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges in the movie adaptation and decided to shoot it in my backyard. I decided to look up the old story, and it was a pretty cool book. Nick and Roy are both law enforcers still enforcing the law after their death as ghost police in The Rest in Peace Department. This book is being sold as a prequel to the upcoming movie and will focus on Roy’s first day on the job when he died back during the Old West.
Aquaman #14
By: Geoff Johns, Ardian Syaf, Joe Prado
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99
The Lowdown: The new 52 debut of Aquaman’s brother, Ocean Master, and the fallout of The Others storyline detailing the fate of the Atlantean relics.
Batman Incorporated #5
By: Grant Morrison, Chris Burnham
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99
The Lowdown: Morrison brings us back to the dystopic future from Batman #666 where an adult Damian has taken over as Batman and the only sane people left are in Arkham Asylum. It kind of seems like a weird direction, but I am sure Morrison knows what he is doing. After Damian gets annoyed with Bruce in the last issue of Bat Inc because he kept Jason Todd’s membership to the group a secret.
Lot 13 #2 (of 5)
By: Steve Niles, Glenn Fabry
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99
The Lowdown: Last month, I included the first issue because it was a horror story coming out on Halloween, but the story ended up being better than I thought. It introduced a very charming family who after a series of problems ends up staying temporarily at a haunted apartment complex with a rich mythology. I’m excited to see where it goes.
Masks #1
By: Chris Roberson, Alex Ross
Publisher: Dynamite
Price: $3.99
The Lowdown: Iconic pulp heroes: The Shadow, The Green Hornet, Kato, Zorro, and The Spider, team up in a dystopic past. In 1938, a new political party swoops into New York City and taken control of the city. They have the support of a number of super-criminals. They corrupt the justice system and institute a fascist police state. The Masks are the only ones that stand in their way. This represents a culmination of many properties that Dynamite has been reinvigorating for awhile.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #16
By: Tom Waltz, Andy Kuhn, Kevin Eastman
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Price: $3.99
The Lowdown: The new rebooted Ninja Turtles title continues its awesomeness. I am not sure why the character is blacked out on the cover. He was already revealed last issue. I guess if you haven’t been paying attention this would be a spoiler, so if you haven’t, stop reading. It’s the Ninja Turtles vs. Slash.
Nowhere Men #1
By: Eric Stephenson, Nate Bellegarde
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $2.99
The Lowdown: I feel like Image has been on such an amazing run lately that any time they have a new series starting it is, at the very least, worth looking into. This is a science fiction tale with a solicit that gives away very little. All I know is a group of celebrity scientists have rung in a new age of enlightenment and the price we have to pay for it.
All New X-Men #2
By: Brian Michael Bendis, Stuart Immonen
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99
The Lowdown: The first issue of this Marvel Now series was way better that I expected. It is dealing more directly with the fallout of Avengers vs X-Men. Beast has traveled to the past to bring back the original incarnation of the X-Men, so that the old Cyclops can talk some sense into the current Cyclops, who has decided to continue his terrorist ways with Magneto, Magik, and Emma.
Astonishing X-Men Annual #1
By: Christos N. Gage, David Baldeon, David G. Williams
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $4.99
The Lowdown: The main action of the book involves Wolverine and his group of X-Men, which is a more classic incarnation of the team, investigating attacks on their friends and associates. The drama of the book is on Kyle, Northstar’s newlywed husband, who comes to grips being married to a superhero. I feel like this is the first time we have seen Kyle since the marriage, and I am excited to see where he stands.
FF #1
By: Matt Fraction, Michael Allred
Publisher: Marvel
Price: $2.99
The Lowdown: As we learned in Fantastic Four #1, with the Fantastic Four travelling space and possibly time, Reed wanted another team guarding the world so they don’t feel so guilty leaving their posts. This includes Ant-Man, Medusa, She-Hulk, and Miss Thing, Johnny Storm’s last date who wears an orange rock exoskeleton.
Thor God Of Thunder #2
By: Jason Aaron, Esad Ribic
Publisher: Marvel
Price: $3.99
The Lowdown: The first issue of this new Marvel Now book knocked it out of the park. Thor was answering the prayers to him from the inhabitants of a completely different planet. When he found it strange that they stopped praying to their own deities, he investigates their disappearance only to find them dead. Now, Thor is on the hunt for a mysterious enemy, known as the God Butcher, before he kills again.
Uncanny Avengers #2
By: Rick Remender, John Cassaday
Publisher: Marvel
Price: $3.99
The Lowdown: Another Marvel Now book that was just so good. Captain America has started an X-Men/Avengers co-op team, and writer Remender isn’t pulling any punches when it comes to their villains. While Avengers and X-Men pair up and try to sort out different problems in the world, Red Skull has gathered his S-Men and somehow become the most powerful man on Earth.
