Why I Love Batman & Robin

First off, let me say that this is not a blog to convince you that B&R is a good movie. It is a blog to explain why I love it so much.

Although I am geekchic, I’m still a chick. Growing up I didn’t want to be Batman or Superman. I wanted to be Batgirl and I was instantly drawn to Alicia Silverstone in her role as Batgirl (it still makes me mad when I think of people calling her fat in that movie). She could kick ass and was beautiful doing so. While the other Batman movies may be infinitely better, none of them featured the same sort of heroine as Batgirl. The other movies had the villain Catwoman and the damsels in distress Vale and Chase, but none of those were who I wanted to look up to.

Besides idolizing Batgirl (and crushing on Robin of course) the movie itself is fun. It’s colorful and full of campy dialogue and unrealistic action scenes. There were ice skates and spaceships! What kid wouldn’t be impressed with that? I can’t tell you how many times I reenacted those actions scenes and kicked all those bad guys’ butts. While the movie may have been somewhat spoofy (or perhaps that’s just Joel’s excuse after-the-fact), I didn’t know or care at the time.

I don’t know how I would feel about the movie if I first saw it when I was older, but because of how much I loved it as a kid, I will always feel that same affection for B&R.
